Sustainable development is not a new term. It has been around for a while but in 1987 at the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, the report “Our Common Future” was released, otherwise called the “Brundtland Report” which included one of the most widely recognized definitions of sustainable development: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
Based on this concept, a lot of new ideas and concepts were formed like eco-literacy which is the ability to realize how eco-systems work and how to use them in order to create a sustainable present and future.
The above terms refer clearly to economy, environment and society. To achieve sustainability and eco-literacy the new generations need to be taught and shown how to use the resources available and, at the same time, care for the future.
The course described here is actually a trilogy of courses, each one focusing on a different aspect of eco-literacy, but each one can also be followed separately according to the needs of each institution.
Course 1 (Eco-literacy for sustainability, an educational approach: Water) deals with water and how the proper use of its treatment and management can lead to a better future.
Course 2 (Eco-literacy for sustainability, an educational approach: Nature treasures around us) deals with alimentation and how food can contribute to a healthier lifestyle but also lead to sustainable development with the correct usage of natures’ treasures.
Course 3 (Eco-literacy for sustainability, an educational approach: Slow living) deals with the concept of slow living that applies to city life, travel, transport etc.
Trainers will be in contact with the participants in order to solve any questions or doubts and provide advice on accommodation, airports, airlines etc. They will also familiarize participants with the website of the seminars (https://www.learntoteacheu.org/) which will be used to upload pedagogical material created during the course duration.

Tuesday: Water and the Sea.
• Conference presentation: Water and sustainability.
• Visit to the Fishing Museum of Palamós
• Meeting with the brotherhood of fishermen: prawns are gold in Palamós
• Gastronomy literacy: “Espai del peix”.
Wednesday: From the river to the sea. Water reserves, industry and Natural parks
• Water dam & electricity: Visit to a dam (Susqueda)
• Water & industry: Visit to the “Textile colony” from the XIX century
• Water & Natural park: Wetlands of Empordà
Thursday: Water and cities
• Urban Water Cycle: Study of water management in a small city (capsa).
• Visits connected with this topic. How to use them as resource at the school.
• Workshop: The “Water day at my school”.
Friday: Other uses of water
• Water and health: Caldas de Malavella
• Water and agriculture: Pals – Rice
• Water and leisure: Pals – Golf court
• Workshop. “Course portfolio: participants contribution”
