Description

Life is a continuum of emotions of varying intensity and we must learn to recognize them and to improve our daily experiences with them. In some circumstances it is important to be able to control and manage them, especially when we set goals, such as educational ones, both as teachers and as pupils. Various studies have shown the critical function emotions play in the learning and teaching process. In our society, the evolution of contents and skills is fast and constant, and technology, such as virtual reality, opens up fields that are difficult to predict. Due to it, the knowledge and management of emotional resources will play a decisive role in the future of the students, maybe more than contents. With the help of education experts, this seminar aims to explain what emotions are and how they are involved in the teaching and learning. Participants will have the opportunity to join practical classes centred on emotions and learn how to transfer these practices and knowledge into our educational activity.

Attending the seminar, the participants will be able to understand the ecology of emotions in regards to their previous but also to their future experiences; to master the most common affecting events occurring in classroom; to understand how emotions affect precise moments of students’ learning and the educational trajectory from early years to university.

The impact that emotions have on learners’ motivation, auto-regulation and academic achievements will be illustrated and questions like the following will be answered: What is the emotional flow? What emotions occur when we give a class in a laboratory or go on excursion with students, and how do emotions influence the experience? Students change their emotional attitudes on learning, according to teachers’ proposals, therefore teachers need to know their resources and tools to master students’ emotions, and to lead them in the learning process. Thus, the evolution of the emotions’ research and the most important theories, from Darwin to Ekman (Facial Expression Analysis) to the last theory of “Constructed Emotion” (Barrett) will be illustrated with the use of practical examples.

The participants will enjoy a visit to the National Museum of Natural Science of Spain, situated in the center of Madrid, by the Paseo de la Castellana, managed by the Spanish National Research Council, and to the Teachers’ Training Center, Faculty of Education, Complutense University of Madrid.

Trainers will be in contact with the participants in order to solve any questions or doubts and provide advice on accommodation, airports, airlines etc. They will also familiarize participants with the website of the seminars (https://www.learntoteacheu.org/) which will be used to upload pedagogical material created during the course duration.
